Summer Intern/Staff Geologist Hannah Martin published a paper in the New Zealand Journal of Geology and Geophysics with Dr. James Muirhead, Dr. Jennifer Eccles, and Prof. Mark Stirling titled “Low Hazard-High Risk: A Case Study of the Active Mangatangi Fault.” This paper investigates the Mangatangi fault, a poorly understood, low-slip rate fault located just south of Auckland, New Zealand’s most populous city. Using geomorphic, geochronological, and geophysical data, they found that the fault has been more active in recent geologic history than previously known, with evidence of at least two coseismic surface ruptures in the Holocene Epoch. The results suggest the Mangatangi fault may pose a greater seismic hazard to the Auckland region than previously considered.
